When we drink Whiskeys we often say or heard saying, “I’ll have a whiskey on the rocks”. It’s true — some liquors benefit from the addition of ice, while others are meant to stand solidly on their own, consumed “neat.” So how do we know which liquors fall into each category? Of course, everything is subjective to the taster, but there are some basic rules you might want to follow. When it comes to scotch, single malts are meant to be enjoyed without ice, as they are more terroir-driven spirits, while blended Scotches can actually be brought to life with the addition of some ice. With tequila, we keep our higher-end anejos neat, yet love dropping an ice chip or two into our favorite silver or reposados. Gin is generally always enhanced by the addition of ice, and bourbon is a little more subjective.
Here is the list of whiskeys that just feel better with ice, we highly recommend it.
DEWARS 12 YEAR OLD THE ANCESTOR BLEND
Dewar’s 12-year-old blend, called ‘Double Aged’ due to the 6 months of marrying in oak casks that the whisky does after initial maturation and blending. Dewar’s is one of the world’s most awarded whiskeys, even winning the Monde Grand Gold across their range. The Practice is maintained despite the name change and the result is Loads of flavor. Drop an ice cube in and let the honeyed fruit aromas open up in this classic blended Scotch.
JOHNNIE WALKER BLACK
Another 12-year-old blended whisky, one of the world’s most famous blends. Johnnie Walker Black is a blend of around 40 whiskeys, very well put together. Johnnie Walker Black Label is a true icon, recognized as the benchmark for all other deluxe blends. Created using only whiskeys aged for a minimum of 12 years from the four corners of Scotland, Johnnie Walker Black Label has an unmistakably smooth, deep, complex character. An impressive whisky to share on any occasion, whether you’re entertaining at home with friends or on a memorable night out. Rocks will open the dried fruit aromas and the long-lasting, lightly smoked finish.
CASA NOBLE CRYSTAL TEQUILA
Awarded in World Tequila Awards, the Best Blanco of 2016, then awarded recently in the year 2017 with a Bronze medal in SIP Award. Crystal Tequila is produced by the Casa Noble Tequila Company at the La Cofradia distillery. Casa Noble has been producing Tequila since the mid-1700s in the region of Jalisco, Mexico. They’re distinct for distilling the Tequila three times instead of the two times required by law. Moreover, they age Tequila in French Limosin white oak barrels, with the exception of Crystal (which is a Bianco/Silver Tequila).
The Blue Agave they use is left to mature for longer as well – for up to 14 years before they’re harvested, unlike most Blue Agave plants that are harvested after “only” 7 years. This helps in the production of a finer spirit. Casa Noble Tequila is endorsed and part-owned by rock legend Carlos Santana.
Adding a few ice chips to this organic, small-batch tequila truly brings out the honeyed agave flavors and light citrus notes that make this tequila one of the best for sipping.
TEQUILA HERRADURA COLECCION : CASA PORT CASK FINISHED REPOSADO
This product will be released once a year every year and will be continuously changing to appeal to tequila aficionados looking for something unique. Herradura will release a new batch for Coleccion de la Casa each year The underlying force driving the Coleccion de la Casa series is innovation and Herradura feels the two-barrel finish of Reserva 2012 –resting first in a medium-char American oak barrel for 11 months before being transferred to a port cask from the Duroro Valley region in Portugal – is a fitting way to start the line. The double-maturation of the Port Cask Finish has imbued the tequila with“hints of port, plum, and pepper. Adding rocks not only adds a pleasant chill to the liquor but helps integrate all the varying flavor profiles going on in this complex, one-of-a-kind tequila.
HENDRICK’S GIN
Hendrick’s Gin is a brand of gin produced by William Grant & Sons in Girvan, Scotland, and launched in 1999. Hendrick’s uses a blend of spirits produced from a Carter-Head Still Of which there is only a small number in the world, and a small pot still, originally built in 1860 by Bennett, Sons & Shears. Both have been restored to working order after being bought at auction in the 1960s by former William Grant Life President, Charles Gordon. The two stills produce strikingly different styles of gin due to their different construction and methods of distillation. The product is created using juniper and other usual gin-producing suspects, though it’s set apart by the addition of rose and cucumber. These pleasantly sweet, floral components added to the bottle become soft and mellow with the addition of ice, creating an unforgettable sipping experience.
PLYMOUTH GIN
Plymouth Gin is not just the choice for seafaring pioneers. Since the beginning of the 20th century, it’s also been the choice of bartenders around the globe. Plymouth Gin is a true original. Since 1793 its unique recipe of botanicals has been made to the highest standards in the same distillery in the very heart of the historical city of Plymouth, on England’s South West coast. It’s these factors that have resulted in our particularly English gin becoming as famous and well-traveled as those who first tasted it.
A lovely nose with an unusual earthy melange of angelica and juniper, with subtle camphoraceous tinges of cardamom and coriander. It’s softly juniper forward, tame this Gin with a few ice chips and you’ll be sweetly sipping for longer than expected. The palate is where I think Plymouth Gin shines. The early palate is softly earthy and gentle piney simultaneously brings together angelica, cardamom, lemon zest, sweet orange, and juniper. I get intimations of botanical which are not even here, such as nutmeg. The palate is soft, oily and gently warming. The finish leads into a soft citrus and earthiness.
FOUR ROSES SINGLE BARREL BOURBON
Only Four Roses handcrafts 10 distinct and extraordinary Bourbon recipes then mingle them by hand to create our family of award-winning brands, and one of them is Four Roses Single Barrel Bourbon. Plummy and fruity with lots of character and at the higher strength. This won Whisky Magazine’s 2008 Best Bourbon Whiskey No Age award, as well as a host of other awards from around the world. The Four Roses Single Barrel’s profile involves a mash bill of 60% corn, 35% malted rye and 5% malted barley, along with yeast blends that reflect fruitily, vanilla, and caramel flavors. It is 100 proof and aged for 10 years.
Nose: Dried spice, pear, cocoa, vanilla & maple syrup.
Palate: Hints of ripe plum & cherries, robust, full body, mellow.
Finish: Smooth & delicately long.
A slight chill and minimal dilution aids in toning down the spiciness factor, making the ripe and robust fruit characteristics of the palate come to life.
