After the production of sugar from sugarcane, there was a lot of waste left. A few years after, Christopher Columbus planted the first sugarcane plant in Caribbean island; it was the British during their colonialism in the 16th century, found another use of the leftover molasses. They took it back to Britain, fermented and distilled it into ‘Rum’.
INDIAN CONNECTION
When the British officials were posted in India, they used to get their hard stuff rationed such as Scotch whisky and Wine, but instead of it getting from England, they wanted to locally distilled and started distilling. Some of the rums are aged in the oak barrels, which deepen the color and aroma profile of it. The longer the rum stays in the barrel the darker the color it will, usually, it is the dark rum which has the deepest color by keeping it in the barrel for a long period undergone heavy charring while white rums are sometimes filtered after aging, in order to get the clear color of it.
