Just because it is Pinot Noir Day!!!

Many of us who like to have a glass of wine or two, love to know all about the wine, where it comes from, which year it bottled, and as well the type of grapes that have been used. And Pinot Noir is one of the famous types of grape.

Pinot Noir wine is considered to be the most highly prized wine in the world. But why? It’s not as rich or big as its noble cousins, in fact, it’s quite the opposite.

Pinot Noir wines are pale in color, translucent and their flavors are very subtle. The grape itself is weak, suffering from a variety of diseases and its genetics make it highly susceptible to mutation. It is a is a red wine grape variety of the species Vitis vinifera. The name is derived from the French words for pine and black. The word pine alludes to the grape variety having tightly clustered, pine cone-shaped bunches of fruit.

It is a difficult variety to cultivate and transform into wine. One of the most sensuously fragrant red grapes in the world with a variety of scented aromas based on red berry characters closest to raspberry and strawberry and often tinged with incense and cola-like spice. It can be a little minty and vegetal but when ripe usually tastes of raspberry or strawberry as well as cherry and, when exotic, loganberry, mulberry and fraise du Bois. If overripe, it becomes jammy. As it matures in bottle, it often develops silky textures and alluring undertones of truffles, game, and leather.

Pinot noir grapes are grown around the world, mostly in the cooler climates, and the grape is chiefly associated with the Burgundy region of France. And it’s in Burgundy where the best Pinot Noir is still produced. Pinot noir is also used to make the Italian wine Franciacorta. Other regions that have gained a reputation for pinot noir include: the Willamette Valley of Oregon, the Carneros, Central Coast and Russian River AVAs of California, the Elgin and Walker Bay wine regions of South Africa, South Australia, Adelaide Hills, Tasmania and Yarra Valley, Victoria in Australia and the Central Otago, Martinborough and Marlborough wine regions of New Zealand. Pinot Noir is also the primary varietal used in sparkling wine production in Champagne and other wine regions.

Being lighter in style, Pinot noir has benefited from a trend toward more restrained, less alcoholic wines around 12% Alcohol By Volume(ABV). Pinot Noir can be really fantastic and goes well with every occasion; it’s a crowd pleaser that anyone in the room will enjoy.

Food Pairing

As we said, it’s a crowd pleaser, it’s a catch-all food pairing wine. Pinot Noir is light enough for salmon but complex enough to hold up to some richer meat including duck. In a pinch, when everyone orders a vastly different entree at a restaurant, you can usually win by picking Pinot Noir; it will make everyone happy.

Cheese Pairing

There is nothing that can match up with the perfect pair of Wine and Cheese. And when it comes to Pinot Noir, it is definitely Comté. Also known as Gruyère de Comté, is made just 50 miles east of the most prestigious Pinot Noir vineyards in Burgundy.

Or it have to be creamy Brie, a blue with a little tang and goats cheese with a bit of bite. The lightness of touch from the Pinot Noir balances well with the rich creaminess where the fruit elevates the earthy taste of the goat’s cheese.
