Impress your dad and let him take a well-deserved break while you make him a Father’s Day-themed cocktail.
1. God Father
The Godfather is simple, sophisticated and another easy way to spice up the average glass of Scotch. A small number of amarettocontributes just enough mellow almond flavor to define a completely different experience without overpowering the whisky.
The great thing about this easy mixed drink is that it does not disguise the whisky; instead, it merely enhances it with a little flavor. It’s good with some of mid- to high-range blended Scotch, though you may want to try your favorite single malt as well.
What You’ll Need
- 1 1/2 ounces Scotch whisky
- 1/2 ounce amaretto liqueur
How to Make It
- Build the ingredients in an old-fashioned glass with ice cubes.
- Stir well.
2.Sidecar
If you choose a Sidecar for Father’s Day you have a few more choices to make. Cognac and Armagnac are the traditional bases for the cocktail but bourbon is more popular now and makes a very pleasant option. Or if Dad isn’t quite a whiskey fan, go with a Boston Sidecar in which brandy and rum make up the base.
Whichever base liquor you choose for your Sidecar, do be careful with the other ingredients. It is very important to find the balance between sweet and sour and too much lemon or liqueur can quickly destroy the intended flavor.
What You’ll Need
- 1 1/2 ounces cognac or Armagnac, or bourbon
- 3/4 ounce Cointreau orange liqueur
- 3/4 ounce lemon juice
- Garnish: lemon twist
How to Make It
- Pour the ingredients into a cocktail shaker with ice cubes.
- Shake well.
- Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
- Garnish with a lemon twist.
A classic addition to the Sidecar, which was mentioned in recipes from the early 1930’s, was to rim the glass with sugar. This is a nice contrast to the sour drink. If you would like to make this cocktail just a touch sweeter, try using the Spanish brandy de Jerez.

Happy Father’s day from the home bar.
